    Federal and State Resources

    Higher Education is a big investment but it is also a key factor in achieving economic well-being and an improved quality of life. There are federal and state funds available to help students pay for college and higher education training.

    Step #1 for every student interested in receiving any kind of financial aid and scholarships is to complete the FAFSA!!!! (see below)

    For information on U.S. Military Service Academy nominations, go to the website of your Senator and/or Congressional Representative and click on Services or Constituent Services (U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination).

    Federal Financial Aid - FAFSA

    The Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA opens the door to the federal aid process.

    Complete the FAFSA online by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov.

    You may prepare to do the FAFSA online by completing the "FAFSA on the Web Worksheet" first. Make sure you use the worksheet for the school year for which you are applying for aid. You can download the worksheet online or pick up a copy at the DEF office, your high school guidance office, college financial aid offices, or your local library.

    FAFSA applications for an upcoming school year are available as of January 1 of that year. After January 1 you should complete that year's FAFSA application as soon as possible. Your application must be received no later than June 30 of the end of the applicable school year. For example, if you plan to enter college in September 2012 you should complete the FAFSA as soon after January 1, 2012 as possible, but before June 30, 2013. Also each state and college has their own FAFSA deadline; check to be sure you meet those deadlines to be eligible for their financial aid programs.

    Prepare ahead of time by going to www.pin.ed.gov and getting your PIN (personal identification number). The student and parent each need a PIN to complete the FAFSA online with their electronic signatures.

    The Delaware Higher Education Office administers 23 state-sponsored financial aid programs and 7 private scholarship programs to help Delawareans continue their education after high school. Applicants for all state-funded programs must be Delaware residents. Click on "Publications" on their site to check out the Delaware Scholarship Compendium , compiled and distributed by the Delaware Higher Education Office. April 15 is the Delaware deadline for the FAFSA to be considered for Delaware state scholarships.

    The state has an extensive array of financial aid programs in the form of grants, scholarships and awards for students who want to further their education beyond high school. March 1 is the Maryland deadline for the FAFSA to be considered for Maryland state scholarships.

    The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) is the Commonwealth's coordinating body for higher education. SCHEV administers over 30 programs and regulations and coordinates a variety of applications for state and federal grant awards. SCHEV has a number of statutory responsibilities including the administering of state-funded financial aid programs, including the TAG program for students at private institutions. Check with SCHEV, your state financial aid administrator, for Virginia's FAFSA deadline.
